WHAT IS A DUCTED HVAC SYSTEM?

In most homes in the United States, air travels through metal ductwork. In the HVAC industry, we call them ducted systems. Simply put, a ducted split system consists of a unit located inside the home and a separate unit mounted outside the house. Ductwork connects to the indoor unit and distributes air to each room in the home. Hence, it’s called (or referred to) a ducted split system.

What Do We Mean by SEER Rating?

Good question. SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. In short, it’s how you measure the efficiency of an HVAC system. Today’s systems are manufactured with SEER ratings ranging from 14 (entry-level) to the highest-efficiency 20+ SEER. Example: A 16 SEER system, on average, is roughly 25% to 30% more efficient than a 10 SEER system manufactured decades ago. Think about that! Can you imagine the difference 30% savings would make to your utility bill!

BENEFITS OF A DUCTED HVAC SOLUTION

Customizable Solutions

Ducted systems offer endless flexibility for most applications.

Energy Savings

Today’s products start at 14 SEER and up to 20+ SEER with AHRI-certified match-ups.

Air Quality

Ducted systems allow for endless indoor air quality (IA) options. The perfect combination is an air scrubber with a built-in UV light paired with a humidifier to dial in the exact humidity (Rh) in winter.

Balanced Air Flow

Properly designed ducted solutions allow for balanced air flow throughout the entire home, eliminating hot and cold spots.

Whisper Quiet

Achieving the lowest noise level has become a competitive race for competing HVAC manufacturers. Today’s high-efficiency systems are made with variable speed motors that result in whisper-quiet operation.

SINGLE SPEED VS. VARIABLE SPEED HVAC STYSTEMS

Choosing the right HVAC system can make a big difference in your home’s comfort, energy efficiency, and monthly utility bills.

Single Speed HVAC Systems

A single-speed HVAC system operates at one setting only: 100% power.

That means when your system turns on, it runs at full capacity until your home reaches the desired temperature—then it shuts off completely.

Benefits of Single-Speed Systems

  • Lower upfront installation cost
  • Simple and reliable design
  • Easier repairs and maintenance
  • Good option for smaller budgets

Things to Consider

Because the system is always either fully on or fully off, you may notice:

  • More temperature swings between cycles
  • Higher energy usage
  • Louder operation
  • Less humidity control

Variable-Speed HVAC Systems

A variable-speed HVAC system adjusts its output based on your home’s needs. Instead of constantly turning on and off, it can run at lower speeds for longer periods, maintaining a more consistent indoor temperature and better overall comfort.

Benefits of Variable-Speed Systems

  • Greater energy efficiency
  • Lower monthly utility bills
  • Quieter operation
  • More even temperatures throughout the home
  • Better humidity control
  • Improved indoor air quality

Things to Consider

  • Higher upfront investment
  • More advanced components may require specialized service
